Building Contractor Licensing

The City of Hutchinson requires that all general contractors be registered before performing any work within the city limits. At this time, the city does not require a general contractor to have taken an exam, but the contractor must provide a certificate of general liability in the amount of at least $500,000, complete an application and pay a registration fee.

Sub-Contractor Licensing

The following contractors are required to be licensed before performing any work within the city limits:
    • Electricians
    •  Plumbing
    •  Mechanical
    •  Sign hangers

Electrical, Plumbing and Mechanical Trade Contractor Licensing
For a company to be licensed as an electrical, plumbing or mechanical contractor, the owner must provide a certificate of general liability in the amount of at least $500,000, complete an application, employ a full-time person that is a holder of a master certificate of qualification, and pay the licensing fee. (The master is required to complete a trade certificate application, provide the necessary documentation and pay a fee.)

Trade Certificate
Any additional employees of the company that will be working within the city limits must obtain a trade certificate. Any Master or Journeyman must hold a Block, Experior, Prometric or ICC certification and provide 6 hours of approved continuing education. The hours must have been acquired during year prior to application; 3 of the hours are to be code related.

Sign Installer Licensing

For a company to be licensed to install signs the owner must provide a certificate of general liability in the amount of at least $300,000, complete an application and pay the licensing fee.
