Traffic

The Police Department Traffic Bureau was started in 1994, and was originally comprised of 1 Sergeant and 4 Patrol Officers. It was started with a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation that paid a large portion of the costs for the first 3 years.

Currently, Sergeant Brian Hirt and Officer Matt Rucker are assigned to the Traffic Bureau.

The Traffic Unit is responsible for (but not limited to) the following:
  • Follow up investigations on all motor vehicle accidents occurring in the City of Hutchinson
  • Assisting the Patrol Bureau with initial accident investigations
  • Traffic related complaints
  • Enforcing traffic laws
  • DUI check lanes
  • Special enforcement activities
  • Assisting City Engineering with traffic related issues
  • Traffic related reporting (to Kansas Department of Transportation)

Traffic Ordinances


The City of Hutchinson adopted the Standard Traffic Ordinances for Kansas Cities and the Uniform Public Offense Code for Kansas Cities published by the League of Kansas Municipalities. These may be accessed from this site.
