Life as a Member of the Hutchinson Fire Department
In addition to responding to fire and medical emergencies, life inside a firehouse is packed with activity.

Firefighters have a wide range of responsibilities, not only to hone the skills required of firefighting, but also for the upkeep of the fire station, equipment, and all the apparatus. All firefighters work a modified 56-hour work week. Everyday activities firefighters engage in include:
  • Maintaining fire apparatus, fire equipment and fire stations
  • Participate in mandatory fitness and conditioning program
  • Daily training drills
  • Attend continuing education classes for firefighting, EMT, hazardous materials, and technical rescue
  • Pre-planning
  • Conducting fire station tours
  • Conducting fire safety inspections
  • Performing community-based public fire education programs
  • Fire hydrant maintenance
  • On-going Community Risk Reduction
Every activity is important and given attention. A firefighter's entire day is spent, in one way or another, always preparing for emergencies in a constant state of readiness.

Pay & Benefits
Fire Recruits starting pay $12.91 per hour. Any firefighter who has an associate's or bachelor's degree in Fire Science shall be hired at Step 2 on the salary schedule ($13.34).

Application Process
Eligibility Requirements
To apply for the position of firefighter, you must:
  • Be at least 18 years of age;
  • Be a US Citizen and able to prove legal eligibility to work within the United States;
  • Have a valid driver's license and a good driving record
  • Have no felony convictions or misdemeanors involving moral turpitude
  • Have no illegal drug use within the last 12 months
  • Meet the medical requirements set forth in NFPA 1582
Minimum Qualifications
  • Be a high school graduate or possess a GED equivalency certificate;
  • Have a current certification as an EMT-B by the Kansas Board of Emergency Medical Services
  • Must have passed FireTEAM written exam with a score of 70 or above in all sections (taken within 24 months with National Testing Network or Hutchinson Community College);
  • Must have a valid CPAT test (taken within the last 12 months);
  • Must meet the City's Residency Policy Requirement within 12 months
Hiring Procedures
  1. Fire Department Interest Card: When not accepting actual applications for employment, interested persons may complete a Job Interest Card.
  2. City Applications: Interested person should complete an online application for employment. Copies of certifications should be submitted with the online application in PDF (portable document format) version.
  3. Eligibility List: Candidates successfully moving beyond the submission of an online application, eligibility verification and verification of CPAT and FireTeam test scores will be placed on an eligibility list for consideration in hiring. Applicants will be notified via email of their eligibility.
  4. Integrity Inventory: Applicants who are placed on eligibility list will be invited to complete an Integrity Inventory. The Integrity Inventory (I2) is a national entry-level selection tool specifically developed for the public safety sector. The I2 predicts individuals' likelihood of engaging in counterproductive workplace behaviors including, but not limited to, theft, violence and drug abuse.
  5. Applicant Interview: Applicants are scheduled for a structured interview before a panel comprised of members from the Training Division, Leadership Team and Human Resources.
  6. Fire Chief Selection: The Fire Chief will make preliminary selections for the remainder of the process for the number of positions needing filled.
  7. Conditional Offer of Employment: A conditional job offer will be extended to the selected candidates by the City of Hutchinson, Kansas Human Resources Department. The conditional job offer is contingent upon the candidate successfully completing the criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, vision requirement and physical exam.
  8. Background Check and Pre-employment Screening: Candidates will be required to approve and pass a criminal background and driver's license check.
  9. Drug Test Screening: Within 24 hours of the conditional offer of employment, a drug-screening test must be conducted and provide negative results.
  10. Physical Examination: A medical screening in accordance with NFPA 1001 must result in the department physician's signature of compliance with applicable NFPA standards.
  11. Probation Status: Candidates selected for hire are on probationary status for a period of 1 year from date of employment.
