[ARCHIVED] 07.10.2019 Mosquito Population in Reno County

Both the Culex and the Zika Aides species of mosquito have been trapped in Reno County this year. Culex mosquitoes can carry West Nile virus and Saint Louis Encephalitis virus. Zika Aides can carry Zika virus. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has stated that they have never trapped this many Culex mosquitoes in the area before and that the risk of disease is high.

KDHE is proposing an aerial spraying of the county to reduce the mosquito population and in turn the risk of disease. This proposal will be discussed at the City Council meeting on July 16th.

In order to further control the mosquito population, please eliminate what standing water that you can on your property. Treat any additional standing water with mosquito dunks, available through the Reno County Health Department. While spraying lowers adult populations, these dunks help control the larvae.
