Human relations is not just a job for the Human Relations Officer (Opinion)

As the Human Relations Officer, I believe that it is necessary and critical that we begin the efforts to hear and respond to the concerns that make people feel uncomfortable, or unsafe, or unheard in their own community.

I am writing in hopes to appeal to the hearts of the citizens of Hutchinson. I started this role as the Human Relations Officer in April of this year. I am very grateful for a chance to be in a position in which I can have an opportunity to impact change. I am also grateful for those who have been concerned about the needs of the city’s people for quite some time and have advocated for this role to be filled, Thank you for your voices!

Our work is not complete!

Over the course of my first 3 months here, I have witnessed why the need for this position was such a priority. There are real concerns about the Human Relationships that citizens of this city have endured without any avenue of support for their experiences. As the Human Relations Officer, I believe that it is necessary and critical that we begin the efforts to hear and respond to the concerns that make people feel uncomfortable, or unsafe, or unheard in their own community.

As the Human Relations Commission begins to shift its focus from having conversations in the community to taking action to change lived experiences, I petition the people of this city to start standing up in their own way. Do not tolerate hate, discrimination and unfair treatment of the people in your city. Do not allow the frequency and flagrant usage of hate language, and slurs. Respond to discrimination and injustice by reporting it. As a community, everyone has an obligation to participate in improving humane relationships within the city of Hutchinson.

We are in this together, as it will take more than the Human Relations Officer to change the hearts and minds of those who have violated the rights of human beings.
