At 1954 hrs the Hutchinson Fire Department responded for a fire alarm at Plaza Towers, 17 East 2nd Ave. The initial arriving crews entered the structure and made access to the alarm panel, accessed the stairwells and encountered light smoke on the 3rd floor. They requested a first alarm assignment that adds additional units to the response.
Crews came across heavier smoke and found a fire on the 4th floor that had been extinguished by the sprinkler systems activation. The fire was contained to the room but did receive water damage in the room and the 3rd floor room directly below. Crews remained on scene for salvage and overhaul, allowed occupants back into the structure and returned the alarm monitored system back into service.
The occupant of the room was arrested by the Hutchinson Police Department for aggravated arson.
As a reminder to occupants in these structures, it is imperative for a quick exit using the emergency procedures and stairwells. When fire alarms activate frequently sometimes, they are overlooked as an actual emergency by residents and some choose to stay in place. Alarm monitoring and sprinkler systems do save lives.
