The Hutchinson Human Relations Commission was established to ensure the fair and just treatment of all residents of Hutchinson.

The Hutchinson Human Relations Commission was established to ensure the fair and just treatment of all residents of Hutchinson. By creating harmonious relationships and advocating for justice through complaint resolution processes, the Commission is uniquely positioned to support the community during this season of coming to terms with racism and its structural impact.

Since the positioning of the Human Relations Commission Officer in April 2019 the following actions have been taken place:

  • Re-branding of the Commission to illustrate the commissions succinct purpose
  • Increasing youth representation on the commission
  • Creating new partnerships within the community
  • Providing educational opportunities surrounding equity and diversity
  • Advocating for facilitated conversations with the policing community
  • Settling discrimination complaints locally

While the outcry for racial justice is being heard around the world, The Commission is excited that we have already been on that path for the local community. Going forward the Commission intends to bring forth the following efforts to help in the fight to end structural racism and policing injustice for the people of Hutchinson:

  • Creating and reviewing policies and practices that address the structural impact of racism in the community
  • Establishing a direct advisory council for issues that youth experience with the policing community
  • Creating targeted educational series that help facilitate race discussions among neighbors and community partners
  • Advocating for diversification of leadership systems that are more reflective of the community’s demographic
  • Ending the harbor of dangerous racist organizations in Hutchinson once and for all

We understand that there is a lot of work that comes with these efforts, but we want to remind this community that Hutchinson is worth the investment and deserves our best.

The commission is often looking for volunteers and participants to help navigate the needs of our community.  Won’t you join us?
